General Information About the Savannah Monitor (Varanus exanthematicus)
Savannah Monitors are a medium sized monitor that are usually readily available both online and at pet stores that carry reptiles. They are smart, beautiful, usually tame easily, are less expensive then other monitors, and do not grow to a huge size (unlike some monitors). They hail from Africa and are listed as a "threatened" species in their native habitat due to the pet trade, reptile skin trade, and the fact that they are used as a source of food in their native countries. It is recommended that you seek to purchase a captive bred lizard so as not to add to the strain on the natural population. Any monitor, including Savannahs, should be treated with respect because they are extremely strong for their size and have sharp claws and teeth. A bite from one of these lizards can even require stitches. Savannah Monitors are well known for becoming tame in captivity especially if you are willing to invest the time.
When choosing your Savannah Monitor, it is better to get a young animal (hatchling, juvenile, under 2 feet). Captive reaised animals are the best choice, but since they do not breed easily on captivity it is likely that you will purchase an imported lizard. Make sure the lizard is active and alert, free from sores and abrasions, fairly plump, and reasonably calm when handled. Young monitors will squirm when handled and sometimes will deficate, this is normal and will end with frequent handling. Check the vent area to amke sure their is no caked feces present.
